Feng Shui Master Andrew Chan — Home Feng Shui: Case 1 Toilet in the Center of the House

In Yang Zhai (residential) feng shui, the geometric center point of a house is known as the "Central Palace" (中宫) or "Acupoint" (穴眼). Its status is equivalent to the "heart" of the building, and in the Bagua Nine Palaces, it represents the "Bright Hall" (明堂) where the core qi field resides. Renowned Hong Kong Feng Shui Master Andrew Chan points out that the Central Palace, belonging to the Earth element, prefers cleanliness, spaciousness, brightness, and stable qi. If a toilet, filled with dampness and impure qi, is mistakenly placed in the central position of a residence, it forms the extremely inauspicious "Central Palace Sha" (中宫煞) in feng shui, directly influencing the overall fortune of the entire house.

From the perspective of qi flow, the center point of a residence is the hub for the entire house's air convection and magnetic field radiation. Toilets constantly accumulate odors, bacteria, and undesirable dampness. When a toilet occupies the center point, these impure qi cannot be directly expelled through external windows. Instead, they emanate from this source, spreading radially through various passages of the house to spaces like living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens. This not only disrupts the originally pure magnetic field of the home but also creates a severely adverse living environment characterized by "heavy filth qi," leading to the complete suppression of the entire residence's auspicious and prosperous qi.

• Family Health Deterioration

  Living long-term in an environment enveloped by impure air can lead to chronic damage to residents' immune systems. Since the Central Palace belongs to the Earth element, corresponding to the spleen, stomach, and digestive system, family members may experience unexplained gastrointestinal discomfort, chronic illnesses, and often feel fatigued and depressed.

• Fluctuating and Unfavorable Wealth

  When the core Bright Hall is polluted, it signifies that the family's "source of wealth" is severely contaminated and obstructed. Residents often encounter situations where they are on the verge of success in their financial pursuits or career advancements, only to fail at the last moment. This can lead to unexpected financial losses, failed investments, or debt disputes.

The correct residential layout should place the toilet in a corner or peripheral position of the house, allowing odors to dissipate outwards. If the layout cannot be changed due to fixed floor plans, the following measures can be actively adopted for remediation:

• Enhance Ventilation and Dryness

  A high-power exhaust fan must be installed in the toilet and kept running continuously to forcefully expel dampness and odors outdoors. Simultaneously, maintain absolute dryness inside.

• Introduce Five Elements Green Plants

  Place several pots of vibrant, large-leafed evergreen plants (such as Pothos or Golden Pothos) in the bedroom or at the toilet entrance. Utilize the wood element of the plants to absorb excess moisture and purify the turbid air.

• Suppress with Feng Shui Objects

  A set of Five Emperor Coins can be buried under the toilet threshold, or a natural yellow jade gourd can be placed inside the bathroom. These items utilize their ability to absorb sha qi and stabilize the magnetic field, preventing impure qi from overflowing into the Bright Hall.
