When traditional geomancy assesses the auspiciousness of a residence, the core principle revolves around eight characters: "collecting qi and retaining wind, favoring meandering paths and avoiding direct rushes." The main door is the primary entrance for qi into a home, much like a person's mouth, responsible for drawing in auspicious qi, wealth qi, and vital energy from the outside. However, if the main door, once opened, aligns directly with an internal room door, back door, or large French windows, it forms a "through-draft" (穿堂风), also known as "through-draft sha" (穿堂煞), which is highly taboo in feng shui.

In a healthy residential magnetic field, qi entering through the main door should gently meander and circulate throughout the living room and various rooms, much like a winding stream, thereby evenly distributing auspicious qi to every corner of the space. Hong Kong Feng Shui Master Andrew Chan points out that when the main door and a back door or room door are in a straight line, a strong convection current is created the moment the main door opens, causing qi to rush straight through at high speed. This "straight-in, straight-out" intense qi flow results in wealth qi and good fortune entering through the front door but immediately dissipating from the back before having a chance to settle within the house, creating an empty, "qi-dispersing, non-gathering" pattern.

• Inability to Accumulate Wealth

  This is a classic wealth-leaking feng shui pattern. Residents in such homes often find that despite their good earning potential, they incur an unusually high number of inexplicable expenses. They frequently encounter unexpected financial losses, friends borrowing money without repayment, or sudden investment collapses, making it difficult to save money.

• Declining Family Fortune, Unstable Household

  The strong, direct qi flow not only carries away wealth qi but also disperses the harmony within the home. Family members often become preoccupied with their own affairs, reluctant to spend extended time at home, leading to a cold family atmosphere and a downward trend in family fortune.

• Health Affected by Rushing Wind

  Excessively turbulent qi rushing directly towards room doors can cause subtle feng (wind) related ailments to those who reside in the rooms for extended periods (especially the elderly and children with weaker immunity), potentially leading to headaches, neuralgia, or joint discomfort.

To mitigate a through-draft, the core solution is to block this direct "qi flow line." Hong Kong Feng Shui Master Andrew Chan suggests the following methods:

• Install an Entrance Screen

  A non-transparent screen, entrance cabinet, or stylish partition wall should be placed between the two doors to force the incoming qi to turn and circulate, achieving the effect of "collecting qi and retaining wind."

• Utilize Broad-Leaved Plants for Buffering

  If the indoor space is too cramped for a large screen, a tall, lush plant with round, full leaves (such as a money tree or fiddle-leaf fig) can be placed along the direct path as a natural qi flow buffer.

• Add an Opaque Door Curtain

  For a main door directly facing a room door, a thick fabric curtain can be hung on the room door. When the main door is open, ensure the room door is closed to reduce the likelihood of direct qi flow.
